Jadeite Luster Explained: Steel Gloss, Glass Gloss, and Oil Gloss
(Steel Gloss)
(Glass Gloss)
(Oil / Jelly Gloss)

Jadeite Luster Explained: Steel Gloss, Glass Gloss, and Oil Gloss
Lustre is one of the most important indicators of jadeite quality grade. Different grades of jadeite reflect light in distinctly different ways. Understanding the three main lustre types will help you more accurately assess a piece of jadeite.
The Three Main Lustre Types
1. Steel Gloss (起鋼光)
Steel gloss is the highest grade of jadeite lustre, found primarily on glass-type (玻璃種) and high-ice-type (高冰種) jadeite. Light forms a sharp, concentrated mirror-like reflection on the surface — similar to polished steel or a mirror. The reflection point is crisp and follows the stone as it moves, creating a vivid sense of life and energy.
2. Glass Gloss (起玻璃光)
Glass gloss is the most common lustre type for ice-type (冰種) jadeite. The lustre is bright and transparent, similar to the reflection off glass, but slightly softer than steel gloss. Ice-type jadeite with glass gloss has high transparency — light penetrates the stone and creates a clear, translucent visual effect.
3. Oil / Jelly Gloss (起油光 / 起膠光)
Oil gloss (also called jelly gloss) is a lustre characteristic unique to old-mine (老坑) jadeite, primarily found in nuo-type (糯種) to nuo-ice-type (糯冰種) material. Light forms a soft, diffuse reflection on the surface — like oil or jelly — creating a warm, deep glow. Rather than a sharp mirror reflection, the stone radiates a gentle, enveloping luminosity.
Lustre Comparison Table
| Lustre Type | Visual Characteristics | Corresponding Grade | Feel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel Gloss | Sharp, concentrated mirror reflection; crisp light point | Glass-type, High-ice-type | Smooth as a mirror |
| Glass Gloss | Bright, transparent, even lustre | Ice-type | Smooth and clear |
| Oil / Jelly Gloss | Soft diffuse reflection; warm and deep | Nuo-ice-type, Old-mine Nuo-type | Warm and waxy |
How to Observe Jadeite Lustre
- Observe in natural light: natural light most accurately reveals the true lustre type
- Rotate the stone: watch whether the light point follows movement — a crisper point indicates higher quality
- Compare reflections: steel gloss is sharp and concentrated; glass gloss is even; oil gloss is soft
- Feel the warmth: jelly-gloss jadeite has a visual 'enveloping' quality — the lustre is never harsh
💡 Expert note: Steel gloss > Glass gloss > Oil gloss does not mean oil-gloss jadeite is inferior. Old-mine nuo-type jadeite with oil gloss can be extremely valuable — the lustre type reflects the quality category, not an absolute ranking. Always evaluate jadeite across all five dimensions: texture (種), transparency (水), colour (色), base clarity (底), and craftsmanship (工).
