Old-Texture vs Young-Texture Jadeite: The Truth Under the Microscope

Old-Texture vs Young-Texture Jadeite: The Truth Under the Microscope

The concept of 'texture' (種) is one of the most important evaluation criteria for jadeite, yet many buyers' understanding of 'old texture' (種老) versus 'young texture' (種嫩) remains superficial. The fundamental difference lies in the tightness of the internal crystal structure — specifically, the size and arrangement of crystal grains.

The Truth Under the Microscope

Magnified 100 times, the difference between old-texture and young-texture jadeite becomes immediately apparent. Young-texture jadeite has large, coarse crystal grains with visible gaps between them — like shards of broken glass, each crystal isolated from the next. Old-texture jadeite has extremely fine crystal grains that are tightly fused together — like a single piece of solid glass, with almost no visible boundaries between crystals.

The Melting Snow Analogy

Imagine a pile of fresh snow (young texture) versus a block of ice (old texture). Fresh snow is made of individual snowflakes with air gaps between them — light scatters and cannot pass through. A block of ice has the same water molecules, but they are tightly fused — light passes through clearly. Old-texture jadeite is the 'ice block' state: the same mineral, but with crystals so tightly interlocked that light flows through them as if through glass.

Old vs Young Texture: Visual Comparison

Base Uniformity: The Evenness of Texture

A single bangle can have locally old texture in some areas and young texture in others — this inconsistency is called a 'base problem' (底子不均勻). Jadeite with a uniform base has consistent texture throughout, creating a better visual effect and higher value. Even if a piece has excellent texture in some areas, uneven base quality will reduce the overall assessment.

Coloured Areas Have Older Texture

An interesting phenomenon: areas with floating colour (飄花) in jadeite typically have older texture than colourless areas. This is because coloured areas experienced greater pressure and temperature during geological formation, causing crystals to fuse more completely. This means you can use the texture quality in coloured areas as an indicator of the stone's overall texture potential.

💡 Buying tip: When evaluating jadeite, look beyond surface transparency — pay attention to the jelly effect and base uniformity. Jadeite with the jelly effect and an even base is a strong marker of old-texture material, and will become more beautiful with long-term wear.
