My Personal Experience Sourcing Jade in Myanmar

Missing Faye Co.

My Personal Experience Sourcing Jade in Myanmar

In 2024, I made the decision to travel to Myanmar — one of the world's most important jadeite-producing regions. For a Hong Kong woman, it wasn't an easy decision, but I knew that if I was serious about jade, I had to go to the source.

Myanmar: The Birthplace of Jadeite

Over 90% of the world's high-quality jadeite (硬玉, the true jade) originates from Kachin State in northern Myanmar, particularly the Hpakant region. Known locally as Kyauk-sein, jadeite is considered a national treasure of Myanmar.

In Myanmar's jade markets, you'll find finished pieces of every kind — rings, pendants, bangles — and traders will illuminate each piece with a torch so you can inspect its transparency and colour distribution. This is one of the most direct methods of evaluation.

The Torch Test: The Most Important Evaluation Tool

The most important thing I learned in Myanmar was: always use a torch. Shining a strong flashlight through the back of a piece reveals its transparency (texture grade), whether the colour is evenly distributed, whether there are cracks or inclusions, and whether it is genuine A-grade jadeite — natural A-grade shows even colour under light, while B-grade or C-grade pieces show abnormal fluorescence or unnatural colour distribution.

My Selection Criteria

Every piece I bring back to Hong Kong must pass my three-stage check. First, the torch test — confirming transparency and colour. Second, the touch test — good jadeite has a warm, smooth quality that feels nothing like plastic. Third, intuition — every piece of jade has its own character, and I only bring back pieces that feel like they have a story to tell.

The Reality of Trading

Jade trading in Myanmar is raw and real — cash transactions, counted on the spot, no receipts. This is standard practice locally, but it takes adjustment for a first-time visitor. I learned how to stay calm in that environment and not let traders see you as an outsider they could overcharge.

What This Journey Taught Me

Going to Myanmar in person made me understand something: the value of jadeite is not only in its colour or texture grade — it's in the story behind it. Which miner dug it out. How it transformed from raw stone to finished piece. How it found its way to your hands. Every piece of jade is a journey.

Every piece at Missing Faye Co. was personally selected by me. When you wear it, I hope you know that someone once stood in a Myanmar market and found it — for you.
