What Is 'New Ice' Jadeite? How to Tell It Apart from Old-Pit Ice Grade

What Is 'New Ice' Jadeite? How to Tell It Apart from Old-Pit Ice Grade
In the jadeite market, 'ice grade' (冰種) is an extremely appealing label. But did you know that a significant portion of pieces marketed as 'ice grade' are actually 'new ice material' (新冰料)? While they appear transparent, they are fundamentally different from genuine old-pit ice-grade jadeite.
What Is 'New Ice Material'?
New ice material refers to jadeite from newer mine deposits that has a degree of visual transparency — but not because the jadeite crystals themselves are fine and dense. Instead, the transparency comes from the presence of feldspar and other transparent minerals mixed into the stone. In other words, the 'ice' in new ice material is a false ice — transparency created by impurities, not by genuine texture grade.
New Ice vs Old-Pit Ice Grade: Core Differences
| Criteria | New Ice Material | Old-Pit Ice Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Source of transparency | Feldspar and other mineral inclusions | Fine, densely packed jadeite crystals |
| Colour | Greyish, bluish, or white — lacks purity | Pure, clean, free of grey tones |
| Lustre | Vitreous but slightly flat | Vitreous, with rigidity and liveliness |
| Jelly effect | Absent | Clearly present — soft, diffused light reflection |
| Fluorescence | None or extremely weak | Faint fluorescence visible |
| Ground (底子) | Unclean — grey or chalky base | Clean, inclusion-free base |
| Long-term stability | Prone to texture degradation, yellowing | High stability, resistant to degradation |
| Investment value | Low | High |
How to Identify New Ice Material with the Naked Eye
- Check the base colour: New ice material has a greyish or bluish base; old-pit ice grade has a pure white or colourless, clean base
- Check the lustre: Old-pit ice grade has a lively, animated lustre; new ice material looks slightly flat
- Check for jelly effect: Old-pit ice grade shows a clear jelly-like quality under light; new ice material does not
- Check for fluorescence: Under a torch, old-pit ice grade shows faint fluorescence; new ice material shows almost none
- Check the cotton (棉): Old-pit ice grade has minimal, evenly distributed cotton; new ice material has more cotton in irregular patterns
Does New Ice Material Have Any Value?
New ice material is not entirely without value — it is simply worth far less than old-pit ice grade. For buyers on a limited budget who prioritise visual transparency, new ice material can be a reasonable option. However, if your purpose is investment or heirloom, it is essential to distinguish between the two and not be misled by appearances.
💡 Buying tip: When purchasing ice-grade jadeite, do not judge by transparency alone. Also observe the purity of the base colour, the jelly effect, and fluorescence. If in doubt, WhatsApp us for a free consultation.
