Why Purple Jadeite Fades in Daylight: The Complete Guide to Lavender Jade

Why Purple Jadeite Fades in Daylight: The Complete Guide to Lavender Jade

Purple jadeite (known in the trade as 'spring colour' 春色 or 'lavender' 紫羅蘭) is the most mysterious and elusive colour in the jadeite world. Its purple hue is there and yet not there — under shop lighting it resembles a field of lavender; in natural daylight it may fade to a faint, barely-there grey-purple. This quality of being 'visible but not quite graspable' is both its greatest charm and its greatest challenge.

The Real Reason Purple Fades in Daylight

The human eye has only three types of cone cells (red, green, blue) and cannot directly perceive purple. The 'purple' we see is actually the brain synthesising red and blue signals together. Shop lighting has a relatively narrow spectrum that favours this synthesis; natural daylight has a complex, broad spectrum that interferes with the synthesis process, causing the purple to disappear or diminish. This is the fundamental reason for the 'daylight death' phenomenon.

Three Colour Families: Which Is Most Durable?

Colour FamilyVisual CharacteristicsDaylight PerformanceRecommendation
Blue-purplePurple with a blue tint; cool tone; like lavender blueMost stable — least likely to fade in daylightBest for long-term wear; most reliable purchase
True purplePure purple; most vivid; like violet flowersModerate — slightly paler in natural lightBest visual impact, but be aware of daylight fading
Pink-purplePink-tinged purple; extremely rare; like rose-purpleMost likely to disappear — nearly colourless in natural lightHighest risk; purchase with great caution

Trade Wisdom: 'Ten Springs, Nine Duds'

'Ten springs, nine duds' (十春九木) is the trade's core verdict on lavender jadeite: of ten pieces of lavender (spring colour) jadeite, nine are as dull as wood in quality. Lavender with good colour (saturated) → poor quality, coarse structure, fibrous haze. Lavender with good quality (old texture) → pale colour, sometimes nearly colourless. This is lavender's inherent contradiction, rooted in the relationship between the colouring element manganese (Mn) and crystal structure.

Why Does the Purple Disappear After Years of Storage?

The colouring element in purple jadeite is manganese (Mn), which is chemically stable and does not easily disappear. However, when jadeite 'degrades' (變種), iron (Fe) oxidation causes the stone to yellow and darken, or structural loosening causes haziness — these changes mask the purple's visual effect, preventing the eye from synthesising the purple signal.

How to Choose a Durable Lavender Piece

💡 Buying tip: When purchasing purple jadeite, always insist on viewing it in natural daylight. If a seller won't allow you to take it outside, that itself is a warning sign. A quality lavender piece should still show a purple tint in natural light, even if slightly paler than under shop lighting.
